Powers, Rita (Fagan) - April 03, 2017

Home

Rita (Fagan) Powers, 94, of Kensington and Niantic, beloved wife of David N. Powers, went to her eternal resting place on April 3, 2017 at her home in Niantic, CT. Born on October 26, 1922 to William and Emma (Stiquel) Fagan, she graduated from Berlin High School where she coined the moniker “Berlin Redcoats”, and received her Bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College. She married the love of her life, Dave in 1948, having met at a Lewis High School football game where she was a teacher. Rita and Dave loved to travel between their homes in Kensington and Niantic and argue about their favorite baseball teams, the Yankees (Rita) and the Red Sox (Dave). She was a masterful cook who could easily expand a Sunday roast dinner from 6 to 16 with no prior notice. As matriarch of the Powers Clan, Rita devoted her life to her husband and sons, the Town of Berlin Registrar of Voters office, tennis, bowling, sailing, fishing (where she routinely bested her die-hard brother Dick and husband Dave), and most of all playing cards where her “take no prisoners” attitude ruled. Rita is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, David, and seven sons, David Jr. and Kathy (Bagley) Powers, Michael and Susan Powers of Niantic, Gerry and Rena Powers of Niantic, Thomas and Joanne Powers of Berlin, Tim and Luann Powers of Juneau, AK, Peter Powers of Niantic, and Paul and Lisa Powers of Kensington. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Mark. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. She is remembered by family and friends as loving, motherly, generous, and selfless. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday (April 10, 2017) at 10am DIRECTLY AT St. Paul’s Church, 467 Alling Street, Kensington. Burial in West Lane Cemetery, Kensington will be at the convenience of the family. Friends and relatives may call at Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway in Berlin on Sunday (April 9, 2017) from 4-6 pm. The mass will be followed by a Celebration of Rita’s Life at the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, 880 Farmington Avenue, Berlin. Donations in Rita’s name may be made to Center for Hospice Care of Southeast Connecticut, 227 Dunham Street, Norwich, CT 06360. The family would like to thank the many wonderful caregivers who helped Rita face the challenges of her illnesses over the past few years. On-line condolences can be sent to powerstim@gci.net to share with Rita and Dave’s family.
